IBM, Hewlett-Packard join Linux bandwagon
Red Hat Software Inc. and IBM Corp. unveiled an alliance Feb. 18 in which IBM will start selling computers with Linux, a free, open source code version of the Unix network operating system. Red Hat distributes and supports Linux, updated on Jan. 25 when Linux 2.
Research Triangle Park, N.C. — Red Hat Software Inc. and IBM Corp. unveiled an alliance Feb. 18 in which IBM will start selling computers with Linux, a free, open source code version of the Unix network operating system. Red Hat distributes and supports Linux, updated on Jan. 25 when Linux 2.2 was released. Red Hat and IBM will also jointly provide technical support to Linux users and cooperate on marketing efforts. Linux will also be available on computers from Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Computer Corp., and Silicon Graphics, following agreements reached in January 1999. In another alliance with Red Hat, Hewlett-Packard added support for Linux-based applications to its Internet Solutions program on Jan. 28. HP plans to supplement this deal by adding application and channel partners that provide technology and services on Linux platforms.
