The WirelessHART Communication Specification (HART 7.1) was approved last month by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) as a Publicly Available Specification (IEC/PAS 62591Ed. 1). The national committees of 29 separate countries participated in the approval ballot, reflecting the technology’s international support. Released by the HART Communication Foundation (HCF) a year ago, WirelessHART builds on international standards including HART Communication Protocol (IEC 61158), EDDL (IEC 61804-3), IEEE 802.15.4 radio and frequency hopping, spread spectrum, and mesh networking technologies.

Now that the specification has been approved, it will begin the process to become an amendment to IEC 61158; HART Communication is already included in the application layer of the document.
