Improving LCD illumination

Modular edge lighting using patented MicroLens light extraction technology from Global Lighting Technologies is said to provide efficient LED-based edge light technology for flat-panel displays. Concept brings molded-in optics, higher brightness (more output/Watt), thinner construction, and a scalable design to illuminate LCDs from &1 to >50 in. diagonal, using high-brightness LEDs as the light source. Edge lights can be used with a range of LED light sources, including RGB and white phosphor LEDs. Applications include LCD and keypad backlights for mobile phones, PDAs, scanners, automotive interior displays, instrumentation and control displays, and handheld, notebook, and desktop computers.
