Information, automation, and control products abound

Whether available online or through hardware/software combinations, plant engineers find ways to do their work more efficiently using technology. The age of information continues to bring innovation. And Plant Engineering continues to provide information about interesting and useful products.

Analysis software detects EMI & grounding problems

Grounding and ElectroMagnetic Interference (GEMI) analysis software is the result of research conducted by Georgia Tech on reducing the effects of electromagnetic fields on electrical and electronic equipment. The software is free and available to electrical professionals. It allows you to analyze existing circuits or new designs to determine the maximum allowable length of the equipment grounding conductor, with or without conduit, or accurately calculate the electromagnetic field density of a network design.

Web enabled controllers bypass computer

The iSeries family of instruments has web server capability embedded and can connect to an Ethernet network. The devices connect directly to the network, bypassing the computer. Controllers are actually closed-loop. How-ever, engineers can monitor process variables, change setpoints or alarms, or make other modifications from anywhere on the local area network (LAN) or on the internet. A discrete web-enabled DIN rail-mounted hub device is available, which can connect to up to 32 instruments.

Online tool aids ergonomic design

TaskWorks Ergonomic Assessment is an internet-based tool that identifies job aspects that may not be physically or psychologically compatible with the human body. This knowledge helps employers design safer, more productive work environments. It allows time and motion studies, posture analysis, and pain surveys to identify correlation between worker experience and objective data. The information provided is compiled, analyzed, and a report, including anthropometric and workstation reference drawings, is formatted online for immediate use.

Tool allows remote access to digital positioners

SoftTools Suite software helps manage field devices by combining features of field network hardware and a variety of communication protocols with Logix digital positioners. Up to eight server ports can be configured for any combination of highway addressable remote transducer (HART), Modbus, or TCP/IP field network protocols. Users can access more than 63,000 HART positioners from a single workstation. It also captures calibration history, provides device status, and performs device diagnostics.
