Information technology (IT) news site InfoWorld announced the recipients of its fourth annual Green 15 Awards, recognizing companies that have used green innovations to improve the sustainability of their IT practices.

This year, InfoWorld notes that third-party products and services have emerged to help companies with green IT projects. This trend benefits organizations that don’t have internal technical resources to improve or build green systems themselves.

Green IT initiatives from companies this year include data center efficiency technologies, virtualization, PC power management, video-conferencing, paperless solutions, and e-waste management.

InfoWorld touted two companies’ in-house development projects that helped green IT systems. Intel created an algorithm to schedule design workloads to run more optimally than on default operation system scheduling, which improved server performance by 17%. Fujitsu created an in-house tool to create an optimal energy-efficient layout for its data center.
