Inspection system, hi-resolution cameras for high-speed production lines

Cognex has added color and hi-resolution enhancements to its OmniView 360 inspection system allow products to be inspected at a rate of 1200 parts per minute.

Cognex Corporation has announced its next generation OmniView 360° inspection system, now with color and 5 megapixel high resolution cameras. OmniView allows detailed inspection and verification of unoriented wine and juice bottles, canned goods, pharmaceutical vials and other cylindrical packages right on the production line. Using the latest Windows 7, 64-bit PCs, OmniView inspects products at up to 1200 parts per minute without disrupting bottling and packaging lines.

OmniView helps to minimize product recalls and protect brand image by ensuring product quality, help control process by identifying defects early and track parts through the supply chain by reading labels and codes. It uses four cameras positioned around the conveyor to capture views of all sides of a product. These are mapped into a 3D model using proprietary Cognex vision technology, and then inspected using Cognex’s VisionPro software library. An additional fifth camera can be used to confirm that the lid or cap matches the label on the front of the package.

Expanded Color Capabilities

Now with full color inspection, OmniView 5.0 lets manufacturing plants inspect color logos, match the cap and label colors, and confirm the color of bottle contents. It also provides operators with an appealing color display.

High Resolution Inspection

Using cameras that are up to 5 megapixels in resolution, OmniView performs detailed inspections on slower lines. The higher resolution can also be used to image tall bottles in a single field of view, while retaining enough resolution to clearly read small print or Data Matrix codes.

“Version 5.0 of OmniView dramatically increases the vision and ID applications that can be solved with expanded color functionality and higher resolution options,” said Markku Jaaskelainen, Executive Vice President and Business Unit Manager for Vision Software. “In addition, OmniView now offers GigE support for the best price/performance option.”

OmniView 5.0 cylindrical product inspection system comes complete with:

  • OmniView application software, complete with turnkey user interface
  • Cognex VisionPro vision tools for product identification and inspection
  • A set of calibration plates to support 3D modeling
  • Cameras:  either four or five camera system, in color or monochrome
