Among instrumentation activities and resources this month are announcements from ISA about standards and conferences, upcoming safety-instrumented system training from Sis-Tech, and a newly published alarm management guide from PAS. Following are details about each, along with links to company Websites and more information.

ISA 's (Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society) SP88 committee is beginning work on Part 5 of the ISA 88 series of standards . "Modular concepts for automated control systems," will define methods for developing a library of automation control components that can be supported by automation vendors for all types of manufacturing. The group is meeting this week in Cincinnati. Anyone interested in joining the effort in the future should email Charley Robinson or Dave Chappell . For more on this topic from Control Engineering , read, " Make2Pack helps ISA-88 branch out ."

The Society also announced that ISA Expo 2007 will be held in Houston, Oct. 16-18, 2007. Feedback from exhibitors and attendees indicate an interest in holding next year's event in Houston again, said Ken Baker, ISA president. ISA Expo 2006 also takes place in that city this fall, Oct. 17-19, 2006. For more information on ISA Expo 2006, click here .

Prism-certified training from Sis-Tech is now available in a series of on-line training classes. The 14-module series is divided into four topic areas designed to provide a comprehensive view of the design and management of safety instrumented systems. Areas covered include hazard and risk analysis and system design and implementation. Training is directed at process, process automation, and instrumentation and electrical specialists. Cost of the training is $75 per module, or $775 for the entire series.

" The Alarm Management Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide " by Eddie Habibi, CEO of PAS , and Bill Hollifield, principal alarm management consultant, focuses on alarm management in the process industries. Book provides step-by-step instructions on how process plant personnel can improve alarm management systems, including development of an alarm philosophy, rationalization of existing alarm strategies, and the application of real-time alarm management. The book will be offered by leading booksellers. Click here to email a request for information on obtaining an advance copy.
