Hundreds of exhibitors showed thousands of solutions to tens of thousands of visitors at the recent Interphex 2004 show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Here are some of the most significant advances in the process control and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries:

  • Emerson Process Management reports that integrating Coriolis flowmeters into its PlantWeb digital plant architecture, programmable logic controller (PLC) systems, or distributed control systems (DCSs) is easier and less expensive with its ultra-compact Micro Motion Model 1500 MVD Coriolis transmitter. Featuring multivariable, digital signal processing and a design to fit easily into control room panels, Micro Motion Model 1500 MVD transmitter has a simple, four-wire connection to the sensor for power and signal, eliminating the expense of running custom cables or providing a separate power source at the sensor. Model 1500's small size saves added expense in the control room because it needs only 0.03 cubic feet of space, rather than the 1.0 cubic feet typically required for Coriolis transmitters.

  • GE Fanuc Automation Americas Inc. reports that its new Change Management Solution software helps users in the life sciences track changes and control versions of automation software and equipment used on the factory floor to provide a framework for achieving 21 CFR Part 11 and GmP compliance. Based on GE Fanuc's Cimplicity Manager software, the new Change Management Solution provides electronic record keeping, electronic signature, complete audit trails, and record security. The solution can connect to an installed base of disparate plant-floor systems by using an open architecture.

  • To help improve product lifecycle management, Honeywell has introduced its POMS eSpec 2.1 software, which manages specifications for products, materials and equipment across businesses, allowing database users to rapidly deploy information to multiple manufacturing sites and production lines. POMS eSpec also complies with CFR 21 Part 11 and ISA manufacturing standards. Building on core software designed for life-sciences manufacturing, POMS eSpec includes new features to enhance the performance of large databases. These include the "Location Model" and tighter integration.

  • Iconics announced that it has formed a technology partnership to support of Saflink's Biometric Identity Assurance Management software within Iconics' Genesis32 automation suite. Integrating biometrics authentication with Iconics' HMI/SCADA automation suite provides maximum security for user identification, and makes Genesis32 a more robust and secure HMI/SCADA system for regulated applications. Saflink's Identity Assurance authentication has been deeply integrated with Iconics' Security Server architecture.
