Invensys to implement major refinery-expansion automation

Sinopec Corp. is China’s largest petroleum refiner with 27 branches (subsidiaries) in China’s southeast coastal area, northern area and Yangtze River Delta. Key petroleum products include: gasoline, kerosene, diesel, lube oil, chemical light feedstock, fuel oil, solvent oil, petroleum wax, asphalt, petroleum coke, LPG, propylene and benzene products for refining. Its refining and ethylene units have processing capacity exceed 7 million tons/year of crude oil and 200,000 tons/year of ethylene, respectively, from 45 petrochemical production units. Sinopec Guangzhou is recognized for its over 60 product categories’ quality.

Invensys Process Systems was chosen by Sinopec Guangzhou Co. , a major Chinese petrochemical producer, to provide Foxboro’s new I/A Series automation systems, along with a broad range of professional services. The new systems will help Sinopec Guangzhou increase its crude-oil processing capacity from about 7- to 13-million tons/year at its complex in Guangzhou City. Besides meeting demand for refinery products from Guangdong region’s rapidly growing economy in the south of China, the new processes will enable the company to process higher-sodium crudes imported from the Middle East. Additionally, Invensys Process Systems China will provide engineering and implementation services and training for plant engineering, technical and operating personnel. When the project is completed, Invensys will have provided the largest part of the Guangzhou complex’s automation undertaking.

Sinopec Guangzhou has used Invensys automation for over 10 years, with three existing installations of I/A Series control systems from Foxboro supporting process units around the complex. Invensys is also an automation supplier to other business units of China Petroleum and Chemical Corp. (Sinopec), the parent company of Sinopec Guangzhou.
