X20 System offers a terminal block and electronic (logic) and bus modules for communications in one product, allowing selection of necessary components, depending on need. It can add to a standard fieldbus and expand the possibilities of standard control systems with flexibility and seamless integration, according to B&R Industrial Automation; simply connect, configure, and run. Modularity combines advantages of rack and I/O slice systems, such as prewiring without the system; hot-pluggable electronics; free bus slots for options; and high-density components.

It has 12 channels on one module with 12.5-mm spacing, 99-mm height, and 75-mm depth; granularity to one channel per module; universal 1-, 2-, or 3-conductor connection technology (extra terminals are not needed); and I/O slice system with characteristics of a rack system.

Design allows assembly of an X20 System on the mounting rail in preassembled form. Removal is easy. Premounted and preprogrammed systems can be delivered just in time. It is a local or remote intelligent controller and I/O system with user-defined characteristics, architecture, and topology. Modules communicate using a uniform X2X-Link backplane, next to each other on the mounting rail, in the same switching cabinet, over 100-m away, or when directly connected with other B&R components. The system reportedly minimizes costs, provides maximum design freedom, and allows a mixture of local and remote topologies without requiring fieldbus modules.
