Soroush Amidi explains the latest developments with ISA100 and Honeywell’s OneWireless program.



One of the challenges related to wireless field devices is dealing with instruments that generate complex data, beyond simple analog or digital information. Typically such devices communicate over wires often using proprietary protocols that are not supported by current wireless offerings. ISA100 includes a capability for tunneling that can carry the data in a way that leaves it intact to the extent that a control system cannot tell if the channel is wired or wireless.

Honeywell has used this feature for complex tank level measuring sensors, and GE has used it with its Bently Nevada vibration monitoring systems.

Tunneling allows information using one communication protocol to be sent over a network that uses another protocol. Read a more detailed explanation.
