Level-detection sensor sees through metal walls

Turck Inc.'s (Minneapolis, MN) levelprox is a level-detection sensor designed for use with metal storage tanks that are 0.040-0.59-in. thick. The device is an ultrasonic-based sensor with the ability to detect liquids inside the tank, without the need for an access port. Levelprox is intended for brewery, dairy, food and beverage facility, chemical handling, and wastewater treatment applications.

INSTRUMENTATION & PROCESS SENSORS

Turck Inc.'s (Minneapolis, MN) levelprox is a level-detection sensor designed for use with metal storage tanks that are 0.040-0.59-in. thick. The device is an ultrasonic-based sensor with the ability to detect liquids inside the tank, without the need for an access port. Levelprox is intended for brewery, dairy, food and beverage facility, chemical handling, and wastewater treatment applications.

Levelprox is reported to be ideal for situations where intrusion into the tank is not possible, for example, when the material is caustic or volatile, under high pressure, or at very high temperatures. There are no material compatibility issues because no direct contact takes place with the media. The sensor is not affected by stirring devices.

To attach levelprox, a mount is first welded to the tank, and the sensor is fastened to it with a built-in clamp. This positions the sensor's face in the ideal detection position, and also ensures a sanitary, leak-proof fitting. Levelprox is completely self-contained with no need for additional electronics.

This ultrasonic sensor offers a clear advantage over traditional capacitive sensors, which require an access port in the tank wall. Access ports reduce the overall structural integrity of the tank, and create a possible leak-point, as well as a location for potential build-up of media in the tank.

A teach button is used for set-up and programming. Once teach mode is entered, the sensor is shown both 'full' and 'empty' conditions. Upon completing setup, the sensor automatically returns to 'run' mode, and the values are stored. If the teach procedure fails, an alarm output is activated to inform the user of the problem. Levelprox also has DIP switches for toggling application parameters, such as normally open/normally closed, time delays, and disabling the teach button.
