Magnetic flowmeter features Ethernet connectivity

Endress+Hauser Promag 53 flowmeter communicates using EtherNet/IP for configuration, monitoring, and diagnostics. Shades of growing Ethernet use at the device level?

Endress+Hauser has introduced the Promag 53 electromagnetic flowmeter with EtherNet/IP connectivity. This aims particularly at users of Rockwell’s PlantPAx process automation system, but can operate in any environment using that protocol. This expands the company’s offering of flowmeters with this connectivity option since there are existing Coriolis flowmeters available with the same features.

The Promag 53 flowmeter measures electrically conductive liquids (> 5 µS/cm) and is suited for applications in food and beverage, water and wastewater, and other process industries. It features an integrated Web server that allows authorized users remote access to view flow data, conduct diagnostics, configure the flowmeter, or perform process optimization. Data can also be accessed securely by higher-level software such as ERP systems, process historians, control loop tuning programs, and asset management systems. Up to 10 variables can be configured, including volume flow, calculated mass flow, and totalized flow for remote access.

“The Promag 53 flowmeter is engineered to integrate seamlessly with the PlantPAx process automation system via a downloadable level-three add-on profile,” says Jerry Stevens, flow product manager, Endress+Hauser. “The integration is as simple as using a USB stick and, due to its plug-and-play nature, the integration can be copied and pasted so that the initial work is done only once.”

Traditionally, devices measuring and controlling process variables rely on a process instrumentation network to transfer data, while other devices within the plant work on a completely different network. Rockwell contends that by improving this complex multitier networking strategy with one standard network architecture such as EtherNet/IP, users have better access to real-time information. This improves the ability to monitor overall performance, troubleshoot out-of-margin conditions, and minimize downtime. 

“Companies have a growing need to capture instrumentation data and leverage it across the production enterprise,” says Steve Pulsifer, market development director, process business for Rockwell Automation. “With the recent EtherNet/IP investments from Endress+Hauser, coupled with the PlantPAx system enhancements, we are helping customers address this need.” One of the targeted markets for this new version is companies that are using the PlantPAx process automation system, as Rockwell and Endress+Hauser work at extending their process industry market shares.

In addition to EtherNet/IP connectivity, the Promag 53 electromagnetic flowmeter has built-in connectivity to Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, Modbus, and HART. It can handle flow rates up to 1,250 gallons per minute with measuring accuracy of ±0.2% (±2 mm/sec), and repeatability of ±0.1% (± 0.5 mm/sec). It can operate in temperatures of -4 to 140 °F (-20 to 60 °C), with pressures up to 580 psi.
