Manage energy across an enterprise, alarm inefficiencies with new Invensys software

Invensys Operations Management introduced the Wonderware Corporate Energy Management application at its OpsManage '09 event in Anaheim, CA (November 3-5). The new application is said to enables manufacturing and industrial automation customers to implement an energy management program that will help achieve sustainability goals.

The Corporate Energy Management (CEM) application allows users to monitor energy and detect and notify personnel of energy inefficiencies. It connects directly to meters on a network, through industrial controllers, and accepts manual entry via the company's Wonderware InTouch HMI and IntelaTrac mobile solutions. The application is layered on top of the Wonderware System Platform, enabling integration with a range of applications, networks, and I/O data sources.

Application functionality includes recording consumption and demand at main and sub meters for a wide range of energy types, including power, water, chill, gas, air and steam. The application also associates production output to energy usage, providing the key performance indicators used in many sustainability programs.

"All departments within a company consume energy and add cost to a product or service, so all must be involved in developing an energy management strategy that can be quickly implemented to benefit the entire organization's bottom line," said Bill Schiel, manager of energy management solutions at Invensys Operations Management.

Schiel explained that the CEM application grew out of an energy management application originally designed by Wonderware endorsed system integrator partner Autoware for a food and beverage client.

Clarifying the market differentiator for this product, Schiel said, "the Invensys' Corporate Energy Management application can track by device or batch--not just at intervals--to deliver an energy cost per batch or unit. This allows users to see how to best manage their energy by event, whether that event is internal or external to the facility."

Schiel added that Invensys will be using the CEM application to manage energy use in all of its corporate facilities.

Clarifying the difference between Invensys Operations Management's CEM and its ROMeo 5.2 application, Schiel said the CEM application is designed to measure and report all aspects of a facility connected to energy use, whereas the ROMeo application is more of predictive tool that can be applied to specific lines or equipment.

With the CEM application, Schiel says companies are able to create a variety of energy consumption reports based on time period, department, cost center, and operational events. Real-time views of energy consumption are provided by Wonderware InTouch HMI, offering an overview of the real-time state of energy usage.
