Metso to rebuild fine paper machine at Europe’s biggest mill

Helsinki, Finland—Metso Paper will rebuild the PM 3 fine paper machine at UPM-owned Nordland Papier, located in Niedersachsen, Germany. The approximately 60-million-euro rebuild project will be completed during autumn 2006.

Helsinki, Finland— Metso Paper will rebuild the PM 3 fine paper machine at UPM-owned Nordland Papier, located in Niedersachsen, Germany. The approximately 60-million-euro rebuild will be completed during autumn 2006.

Metso Paper’s contribution will consist of a headbox, wire section, and a press section with a shoe press. The dryer section will be modified to correspond to the higher speed and increased production capacity. Also, the machine will be equipped with an on-line calendar, a reel, and a fully automatic winder. Metso Paper also will provide construction, start-up supervision, training, and mill engineering. Metso Automation will supply machine and process control systems.

The rebuild project’s goal is to improve PM 3’s product quality and production efficiency. This fine paper machine has a wire width of 7,050 mm and it is dimensioned for a capacity of 1,115 tons per day.

In fact, Nordland Papier is the biggest fine paper mill in Europe. It has 1,850 employees, and its production capacity is approx. 1.3 million tons of fine papers annually with four paper machines supplied by Metso.
