The next communications revolution will involve replacing circuit switched networks with packet switched networks. Future systems will handle packetized real-time streams, such as speech and video. Digital signal processors (DSPs), which have always been optimized for real-time applications, will interface with packetized backbones, such as 155 Mbs ATM. During its recent "Horizons" press briefing, Motorola introduced its new DSP, MSC8108, which runs networking protocol layers, enabling it to link directly to packetized backplanes like ATM and Fast Ethernet. MSC8108 features an on-chip network interface and is the first product to use Motorola's Star*Core DSP technology. For more information, visit www.controleng.com/freeinfo .
