NASA fuzzy logic expert to speak at ESTECH

IEST has announced former NASA division director, Michael F. Lembeck will keynote ESTECH 2011 – “Reaching for the Stars.” He designed, coded, and integrated the first fuzzy logic application to fly in space aboard almost every space shuttle flight since STS-49, and on the International Space Station (ISS).

The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST) has announced that former NASA division director Michael F. Lembeck will be the keynote speaker at ESTECH 2011, the annual technical meeting of IEST, to be held May 2–5 at the Chicago Marriott Schaumburg in northwest suburban Chicago. He designed, coded, and integrated the first fuzzy logic application to fly in space aboard almost every space shuttle flight since STS-49, and now on the International Space Station (ISS). In keeping with the theme of this year’s conference, “Reaching for the Stars,” Dr. Lembeck will discuss “Why Space Exploration Is Important for the United States.”

Currently the Vice President of Engineering for DCI Services and Consulting in Houston, Texas, and a Senior Project Integration Engineer for Boeing's Commercial Crew Transportation System Development Program, Lembeck earned his BS, MS and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His previous positions include Houston Operations Director for Northrop Grumman, Requirements Division Director for the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters (where he participated in the development of the nation’s Vision for Space Exploration), and Vice President for Remote Sensing Programs at the Orbital Sciences Corporation. Prior to working at Orbital Sciences, Lembeck was the Chief Engineer for a primary free-flying space shuttle payload, Wakeshield Facility-3, at Houston’s Space Industries, Inc., where he also served as the Manager of Engineering.
