NEMA standard helps with motor, generator selection
Motor and generator performance, safety, testing, construction, and manufacturing of ac motors, dc motors, and generators are covered in ANSI/NEMA MG 1-2011.
Practical information on ac motors, dc motors, and generators, about performance, safety, testing, construction, and manufacturing is available in ANSI/NEMA MG 1-2011. The standards document is designed to assist users in the proper selection and application of motors and generators, according to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).
The NEMA Motor and Generator Section said it developed the document, published earlier this year, based on sound engineering principles, research, and records of test and field experience, along with information from manufacturers, users, inspection authorities, and others having specialized experience. Although some definite-purpose motors and generators are included, NEMA said, the standards do not apply to machines such as generators and traction motors for railroads, motors for mining locomotives, arc-welding generators, automotive accessory and toy motors and generators, and machines mounted on airborne craft.
In the revision, work of other organizations whose standards are related to motors and generators was considered. Revision 1-2011 revises and supersedes the NEMA Standards Publication No. MG 1-2010.
NEMA committees revise standards periodically to accommodate changes in user needs, advances in technology, and changing economic trends. The section accepts input from those with experience in the selection, use, or manufacture of electric motors and generators, to the attention of the Motor and Generator Section via Vice President, Technical Services, National Electrical Manufacturers Association, 1300 North 17th Street, Suite 1752, Rosslyn, VA 22209.
