The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA, Rosslyn, VA) has released MG 1-2003 ''Motors and Generators'' standard, which is a major revision of the organization’s ''bible'' on the proper selection and application of motors and generators. The updated standard comprises more than 500 pages of manufacturing and performance data. It includes a new section on NEMA Premium Efficiency Motors (with expanded information on short-time-rated machines) and modifications in dimensional tables and drawings. Part 5, ''Classification of Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures for Rotating Machines,'' also has been updated to align MG 1 with the IEC 60034-5 standard (for electric motor mechanical requirements).

MG 1 ''continues to be a living document,'' says NEMA, because of periodic revisions that reflect changes in user needs, technology advances, and shifts in economic trends. MG 1-2003 can be purchased for $208 in CD-ROM or hard copy by visiting the web site ( click here ) or through Global Engineering Documents; call +1 800/854-7179 (in the U.S.) or +1 303/397-7956 (international).
