Culminating more than two years of work, ObjectAutomation (OA, Santa Ana, Calif.) began shipping OAenterprise 98 worldwide on May 18. “We have over 150 beta sites testing and evaluating our new software and we’ve already received a number of substantial orders for our first product,” said Jon Wimer, OA’s chairman and ceo. OAenterprise 98 is the world’s first “Object-Based Control” system, says Mr. Wimer, who adds that it serves discrete, process, batch, semiconductor, motion control, numerical control and building automation applications equally well. OAenterprise 98’s worldwide release includes OA’s OA2control, OA2view, OA2history and OA2alarms software applications based on OAframework, which OA says is the industry’s first Object-Based framework. In addition, OA has also cooperated with other OMAC committee members to supply the automotive and OEM (original equipment manufacturing) industries with a software solution designed to meet the OMAC specification, and demonstrated with four other firms on May 11 the first working prototype of an OMAC controller in a machine-tool application at the IAM show.
