Emerson Process Management has launched two global language versions of its PlantWeb University online educational program. The free training courses are available in Chinese and Spanish; both feature user-friendly interfaces and access to 46 courses and five white papers on current automation technology and business topics.

The first Chinese-language version of PlantWeb University went online in 2004; the 2006 version offers an improved user interface and is said to be easier to use. Courses are free to anyone; each takes about 15 min to complete. Participants can learn at their own pace from any Internet connection.

"Providing courses in multiple languages is part of our ongoing effort to make PlantWeb University a truly global learning center," said Jane Lansing, vice president, Emerson Process Management. "Our goal is to provide manufacturing professionals worldwide with relevant educational information on the latest technology developments. We will include more content at the Chinese and Spanish sites this summer and will be adding more languages in the future."

The program offers "business" and "engineering" schools of instruction. The business school focuses on improving plant profitability, including how to use the structured metric of Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). The engineering school explores leading automation technologies such as fieldbus and HART and covers such topics as networking options and intrinsic safety.
