Project report: Oil & gas project calls for seamless integration of third-party technologies

Kuwait project taps automation supplier as system integrator.


Korea-based SK Engineering and Construction (SKE&C) has selected Honeywell Process Solutions to design the process control system and provide integration services for a major oil and gas expansion project in Kuwait.

The agreement reportedly calls for Honeywell to provide the main process automation, safety and operator training systems for the plant, and integrate its technology with existing third-party systems. By using Honeywell as the single process control and automation provider, SKE&C hopes to minimize the engineering effort needed to integrate the plant subsystems.

“As demand grows, customers are increasingly looking to integrated systems to streamline production while maintaining worker safety,” says SangWoo Lee for SKE&C. “Honeywell was the best choice for this project because we have seen first-hand how it seamlessly integrates third-party technology to form a cohesive solution. This ultimately leads to faster production and safer operations.”

Honeywell will supply its Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS), which allows operators to control and manage all processes in the facility from a central point. It also enables users to monitor information from critical subsystems, such as fire and gas detection and security devices. Additionally, Honeywell’s Safety Manager will be used to coordinate procedures such as unit start-up and shut-down. For operator training, SKE&C selected Honeywell’s UniSim Operations, a process simulation system that helps reduce operator error and improve safety and efficiency by training operators on processes offline. This approach can also lead to quicker plant start-up.

“Every plant uses technology from multiple vendors, which is why it is imperative that the technologies be able to work together,” said SangHyeok Lim, global business team manager for Honeywell Process Solutions Korea. “A carefully engineered, integrated system ultimately means better business results because operators work more efficiently, better diagnostics improve reliability, and the environment is safer.”
