PVC producer expands with Honeywell's Experion PKS

Phoenix, AZ—Honeywell Industry Solutions announced May 5 that Japan-based Shin-Etsu PVC BV has selected its Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) to help expand its vinyl chloride plant in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Phoenix, AZ— Honeywell Industry Solutions roject. Shin-Etsu has offices and manufacturing facilities in 14 countries, including six polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plants, which reportedly makes it the world's largest PVC producer.

The expansion project, scheduled for completion in October 2003, involves adding a fourth process or 'cracking' furnace to increase Shin-Etsu's production of vinyl chloride monomers, an intermediate of PVC. Honeywell's business, process and asset management system, Experion PKS, will help Shin-Etsu integrate its new furnace with the Rotterdam facility's existing automation and control system, while also taking advantage of FOUNDATION fieldbus smart instrumentation technology.

'We need integration with our installed base and Honeywell's Experion PKS provides that,' says Leen van der Reiden, Shin-Etsu's E&I maintenance engineer. 'Our goals are increased productivity and reduced maintenance costs. Experion will help us achieve both objectives.' Van der Reiden adds that Shin-Etsu also favored Honeywell's dedication to open standards, as well as the tools and knowledge developed via the Abnormal Situation Management Consortium, a Honeywell-led joint research and development group of 10 major companies and universities.

The initial Shin-Etsu order expands on the facility's TotalPlantdevelop application software and Asset Manager PKS.
