QNX donates source code to Eclipse.org

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada— To advance the adoption of standards for embedded software development, QNX Software Systems recently announced that it is contributing source code from selected C/C++ tools in its QNX Momentics development suite to Eclipse.org . This QNX technology will be used to enhance the C/C++ Development Tools (CDT) Project for the Eclipse platform, and will help build an extensible, industry-standard framework for integrating tools from a variety of C/C++ tools vendors. This action demonstrates QNX's commitment to the Eclipse.org consortium and to the formation of a standard platform for C/C++ software development.

'The Eclipse Tools Project team working to create C and C++ tools will benefit from the leadership, expertise and unique perspective that QNX brings to the table,' says Skip McGaughey, chairperson of the Eclipse Board of Stewards. 'Best of all, as the QNX team works to address support for a large number of embedded processor architectures, all deployment environments addressed by Eclipse-powered tools will benefit.'

The CDT Project, with QNX's source code, will help the project's C/C++ integrated development environment (IDE) work with a broad range of development hosts and target processors. Sebastien Marineau, a senior architect at QNX, has taken on the role of project leader for the CDT. Hey provides.

Earlier in June 2002, QNX launched the QNX Momentics development suite, which includes the first commercial C/C++ IDE based on Eclipse. QNX Momentics offers embedded developers tool-to-tool integration and, as a result, much greater productivity.

'In developing the QNX Momentics development suite, we've acquired a vast amount of Eclipse knowledge and expertise,' says Dan Dodge, QNX's co-founder and ceo. 'By sharing portions of our code, as well as our hands-on experience, we hope to enhance the strides already taken by the CDT initiative to deliver a standard, open source C/C++ IDE framework that will encourage tool integration across vendors.'

The software donated by QNX is now being integrated into the Eclipse CDT Project. The QNX-enhanced CDT code will be available later this summer.

The open-source Eclipse community creates royalty-free technology as a universal platform for integration of development tools. Eclipse-based tools give developers freedom of choice in a multi-language, multi-platform, multi-vendor supported environment. Eclipse delivers a plug-in based framework that makes it easier to create, integrate and use software tools. Integrated development environments, tools, and new features plug in to extend the core Eclipse Platform. Commercial support and offerings made with Eclipse technology are available from multiple sources for a variety of development platforms and deployment targets ranging from embedded computers to mainframes.
