Embedded computer manufacturer RadiSys Corp. recently introduced RT-OPC, a new Microsoft Windows NT-based software that extends OLE for Process Control (OPC) to support hard real-time manufacturing data and process control applications. The OPC Foundation's specification—a standard set of COM/OLE interface protocols to promote interoperability—is being adopted rapidly by providers of I/O and fieldbus devices as well as developers of HMI, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and database packages.

"RT-OPC combines the OPC standard interface with INtime software, RadiSys' real-time extension for Windows NT, making hard real-time data and control available directly to any third party OPC client application running on Windows NT," says Alex Doumani, general manager, RadiSys Embedded Software Operations. "This enables OPC-based systems to include tasks and events that must be serviced within a specific period of time, without fail. A PID controller is an example of a real-time task that now can be easily incorporated into the OPC architecture using RT-OPC."
