Real-time flash-based microcontrollers

Atmel Corp. announces the first family of ARM9-based Flash microcontrollers (MCUs) optimized for real-time embedded applications that have outgrown ARM7. Based on the ARM926EJ-S processor core, Atmel's SAM9 controllers share common integration levels, peripheral sets and programming models with Atmel's SAM7 MCUs.

Atmel Corp . announces the first family of ARM9-based Flash microcontrollers (MCUs) optimized for real-time embedded applications that have outgrown ARM7. Based on the ARM926EJ-S processor core, Atmel’s SAM9 controllers share common integration levels, peripheral sets and programming models with Atmel’s SAM7 MCUs.

Tuned for real-time applications, SAM9 MCUs have all the features required for real-time embedded control applications, including an on-chip RC oscillator, watchdog timer, and 8-level 32-source priority interrupt controller and single-cycle instruction fetch.

These are reportedly the first ARM9-based microcontrollers with Flash memory integrated on the same chip, offering better performance and lower power consumption compared to stacked die implementations. Atmel also offers a common peripheral set for ARM7 and ARM9 microcontrollers, which simplifies migration of applications between the two families.
