Real-time optimizer helps gain American Chemistry Council award
Austin, TX — Emerson Process Management’s AMS Suite—a real-time optimizer—has been cited as a major factor behind Eastman Chemical Co. ’s award from the American Chemistry Council (ACC). Eastman received the ACC’s “Exceptional Merit” honor for “Significant Improvements in Manufacturing at a Plant Site.” AMS Optimizer provides the setpoints and equipment selections necessary to achieve optimum process operation on Eastman’s Kingsport, TN, utilities plant.

Lemuel Mixon, Eastman project leader. “We have been using the AMS Optimizer as part of a focused initiative to reduce energy costs, and this technology has been instrumental in helping us meet our energy costs reduction goal.”
AMS Optimizer generates the ideal loading on each boiler based on the current demands to redistribute steam to the most efficient power generating units. Other system benefits include the ability to identify losses due to the degraded performance of the mills on some boilers and to provide a unified approach to plant operation across the site’s powerhouses.
The American Chemical Council award is part of its “Energy Efficiency Continuous Improvement Program” that encourages members to improve energy efficiency and minimize energy related environmental impacts. ACC presented a total of 31 awards, five for exceptional merit, to companies for company-wide or plant-specific progress. Winners were selected from five categories: environmental impact, energy efficiency program, non-manufacturing improvement, public outreach, and significant improvements in manufacturing.
Eastman received the award for the latter category, which is given to companies that improve energy efficiency in their manufacturing operations through technical innovations, creative projects or novel procedures or actions.
