Three supply chain execution specialists arepiloting a real-time temperature sensing system for monitoring shipments of pharmaceuticals to meet strict Europe regulations.

AeroScout provides the temperature sensing RFID Wi-Fi tags; and Microlise the real-time Transport Management Centre software to support third-party logistics provider DHL in monitoring shipments throughout the supply chain. The sensor-enabled RFID tags attached to shipments in the load compartment send information to the Microlise Tracking Unit in the vehicle, which transmits temperatures and GPS location information to a central Microlise server monitored by DHL.

“Current temperature monitoring solutions don’t involve real-time communications in transit,” says Joshua Slobin, director of marketing for AeroScout. “They can monitor but they can’t communicate. Shippers weren’t finding out there was a problem until it was too late to do anything.”

The partnered solution enables real-time alerts that can be transmitted via email or phone. The pilot project involves shipments from a leading health-care products company in Europe over one shipping lane, with the expectation to expand to others in the future.
