Research identifies three-level measurement markets

A study of inventory tank gauging system and process level measurement device markets in the U.S. has identified three major classes of vendors. The types of competitors are:

  • Those offering a narrow range of technologies;

  • Those offering a broad range of technologies;

  • Those for which only portions of their products are used in inventory tank gauging/process level measurement.

The report, from Venture Development Corp ., found all the major types of vendors are represented in the list of top ten suppliers of these products, indicating that companies can be successful in this market regardless of the strategy they choose. In addition, VDC identified the product technologies of the leading vendors in these markets and found that even if a vendor has a narrow product line in terms of the sensing technology, it may still have a broad line using those technologies with various configurations, performance, and options.

The survey also looked at a number of other market trends. It showed that microwave/radar products (both contact and non-contact) are expected to experience the highest growth rates for both the U.S. process level measurement and inventory tank gauging markets. Sonic/ultrasonic products are forecast to have the next highest growth rate in the U.S. process level measurement market. The most important criteria purchasers use in selecting devices and vendors include accuracy, reliability, durability, ease of use, price, and technical support.
