Rockets or cars: Who, what was your engineering spark?

Oak Brook, IL – Help us inspire others, with your stories. Ask engineers over the age of 40 about initial engineering interest and the "Space Race" will likely appear at or near the top of the list. Today’s youth live in a world with space stations, robotic vehicles on and video game consoles that are more powerful than the computers previous generations used to put a man on the moon.  Tell Control Engineering who or what got you interested in engineering.

Oak Brook, IL – Help us inspire others, with your stories. Ask any engineer over the age of 40 how he or she first became interested in engineering and the "Space Race" will likely appear at or near the top of the list. In contrast, today’s youth live in a world where space stations orbit the earth, robotic vehicles roll across the surface of Mars and video game consoles are orders of magnitude more powerful than the computers previous generations used to put a man on the moon.
This poses an interesting challenge and a wonderful opportunity.
The need to inspire and motivate the next generation of engineering talent has never been more acute. And industry is rising to the occasion with a groundswell of activity aimed at fostering the next generation of engineers. Organizations like the Discovery Channel are leading the charge to some degree. Programs like

MythBusters

and

Build it Bigger

are runaway hits for the network and are capturing the attention of children and adults. A number of organizations, however, are taking a more direct approach, and Control Engineering ’s Marc Moschetto, editorial director, talked to them for the magazine's January 2008 cover story, "Closing the Skills Gap." But we want more personal stories.
Tell us who inspired you, so we can help inspire the next generation . Control Engineering is collecting stories that have inspired engineers, and the folks who mentored them. Did you build rockets with your dad? Help out the maintenance guy in high school? Long to hang out in your neighbor’s wood shop? Use the Talk Back, post a comment feature

Closing the Skills Gap

.”
Let us know how you became interested in engineering, or how you're helping the next generation of curious young people to take on the engineering challenges of tomorrow.
