Safety systems: BASF integrates burner management into SIS

BASF has implemented a new burner management system (BMS) at one of its Ludwigshafen production units that allows control functions to be integrated with its larger safety system. The BMS from HIMA incorporates TÜV-approved function blocks which simplify system programming and make it easier for the company to convert other burner control systems in the future.

BASF’s combustion engineering centre commissioned HIMA to install a safety-related automation system for the burner controller in a thermal exhaust cleaning plant. Plant operators wanted the regulation and control equipment in one compact, centralized system including safety related automation, to replace the conventional burner controller.

HIMA designed four function blocks for burner controllers certified to SIL 3 and TÜV-approved to DIN EN 746-2, DIN EN 676 and DIN EN 12067-2. In this application the blocks provide four control and monitoring functions: pre-ventilation, seal testing, ignition and flame monitoring. This approach the need to test each individual function block, saving time and expense when programming the safety system.

HIMA says BASF expects to use this BMS application as one of its standards in the future, reducing commissioning costs. Comprehensive diagnostic features log and identify system faults to save on maintenance.

HIMA’s solution incorporates a HIMatrix F30 compact controller, an F3 DIO 20/8 and an F3 AIO 8/4 remote I/O module, and a panel for the local operation and monitoring of the system. The system handles safety-related processing for 14 digital outputs and 40 digital inputs, plus 4 analog outputs and 8 analog inputs. Communication with the operating and monitoring interface is via Modbus TCP.
