Oak Brook, IL – White papers on safety are among those available in the Control Engineering Resource Center. Most recently, these include:
-Safety-related Positioning Measuring Systems from Heidenhain;
-An Integrated Approach to Safety: Defense in Depth” from Honeywell Process Solutions;
-Safety “Light Curtain Installation” from Omron STI; and
-Simple, Robust Sensor Safety Networking from Pepperl+Fuch.
White papers can be read at Control Engineering Resource Center .
Here’s how to submit a white paper to the Control Engineering Resource Center .
Tips from the process safety and machine safety white papers follow.
Safety-Related Position Measuring Systems from Heidenhain
Heidenhain has safety-related position measuring systems based on serial data transfer via EnDat 2.2 can be used as a single-encoder system in conjunction with a safe control in applications with control category SIL-2 (in accordance with IEC 61 508) or performance level “d” (in accordance with ISO 13 849). The safe transmission of the position is based on two position values generated independently from each other and on independent error bits. These are provided to the safe control.
An Integrated Approach to Safety: Defense in Depth from Honeywell Process Solutions: Ensuring safety requires reducing the risk of incidents, faults and failures that can disrupt normal operations. This effort goes far beyond installing fail-safe controllers or a safety instrumented system. To mitigate risk of serious incidents that can cause injury to personnel, equipment and the environment, it is important to consider safety from all aspects of a plant’s operation. An integrated approach to plant safety helps customers improve business performance and peace of mind. Honeywell includes independent yet interrelated layers of protection to deter, prevent, detect and mitigate potential threats.
Installing light curtains from Omron STI : It is important that the user be familiar with the installation requirements, safe mounting distance, controls and features before using a safety light curtain. Omron STI has found that light curtain installation is most easily accomplished if it broken down into discrete steps. These steps include:
1. Understanding the usage requirements for a safety light curtain;
2. Calculating the minimum safe distance;
3. Physically mounting the light curtain;
4. Preparation of the control enclosure;
5. Configuring the features of the light curtain;
6. Connection of power and termination of outputs;
7. Application of power and safety light curtain alignment; and
8. Testing of the safety light curtain for proper operation.
Simple, Robust Sensor Safety Networking, from Pepperl+Fuchs looks at ASInterface Safety at Work (SaW), which remains compatible with all applications in the field. Two new components can bring functional safety to any existing AS-Interface system: SafetyNodes and the SafetyMonitor. SafetyNodes are I/O nodes constructed to satisfy the strict rules set forth by safety regulations, and offer inputs for typical safety device like safety light curtains, e-stops, pressure mats, key switches, and door interlocks. The SafetyMonitor is a monitoring device that contains the OSSDs, replacing safety relays in traditional hardwired installations.
