To aid consistent interface specification of Ethernet, TCP/IP, and web technologies, Schneider Electric (Paris, France) announced Aug. 21 at ISA Expo/2000 that it has joined six companies that founded the Interface for Distributed Automation (IDA) group in March 2000. The founders—Phoenix Contact, Sick, Lenze, Kuka, Jetter, and AG-E—report that resulting interface specifications will be available to all companies free-of-charge in just a few months, which will simplify automation systems and generate cost savings for users. They emphasize that IDA is not a protocol or standards organization. IDA was also joined by Real-Time Innovations (Sunnyvale, Calif.), which will help IDA build open services based on its real-time, publish-subscribe model. IDA also recently secured support from 12-member Industrial Automation Open Networking Alliance (IAONA) Europe, which recommended that U.S.-based IAONA support it as well. In a meeting during ISA Expo/2000, IAONA agreed to consider this suggestion. For more information, visit www.ida-group.org or www.controleng.com/freeinfo .
