Linear, torque, and contact sensing capabilities increased recently with new product introductions from Macro Sensors , Magtrol , and Omron .

Macro Sensors spring-loaded ac- and dc-LVDTs can be shortened with a radially mounted, sealed connector for use in locations with space restrictions.

Macro Sensors spring-loaded ac- and dc-LVDTs are said to offer consistent measurement in harsh dimensional gauging applications. A radial-mounted sealed connector reduces installed length. Applications include dimensional or position measurement in automotive factories, forges and foundries (large shaft TIR measurements), metal fabricating shops, paper and/or plastic film plants, industrial process automation applications and all types of motion control systems. Stainless steel construction of the GHSAR/GHSDR 750 series endures harsh industrial environments, such as shop floors where dirt, oil, water, and machine coolants may be present. Electronics and coil windings are hermetically sealed against hostile environments to IEC standard IP-68.

The GHSAR offers a through-bore design that allows for air purging of the sensors' bearings to remove any potential contaminants. Use of a precision sleeve bearing results in excellent measurement repeatability of 0.000025 in. (0.6igital recorder or computer-based data acquisition system. GHSDR 750 units feature built-in electronics operating from a ±15V dc input and provide a pre-calibrated 0 to ±10 V dc output that works in conjunction with many PLCs, digital indicators, A/D converters, computer-based data processors, andquality control data collection systems. Prices start at $350.

Magtrol Inc . introduces the new TF Series Torque Flange Sensor. Robust construction allows use in harsh environments. The TF Sensor can be used for torque measurement of transmissions, powertrains, wind generators, gas turbines and boat engines. It can also be used in general com-bustion engines as well as in electric motor and gearbox test benches. It lessens signal interfer-ence with an antenna that does not need to be looped around the sensor. Additionally, a protective cover can be mounted close to the sensor with no effect on the signal, unlike in other systems that have looped antennae. Torque range is 50 N-m to 50,000 N-m, an accuracy of 0.1% to 0.25%, an overload capacity of 200% and an overload limit of 400%.

Omron expands its smart sensor family with a contact displacement measurement sensor said to be one of the most accurate. Using digital technology, the ZX sensors measure length, width, thickness, diameter, eccentricity, flatness, inclination, and evenness of an object with a resolution of less than 0.1 mm and linearity of 0.3% full-scale max. It is unaffected by electrical noise or interference. Programming and operating the product is done via an HMI screen. Three sensor heads, five sensor tips, and two amplifiers are available, for low-torque measurements, delicate surfaces, long strokes, narrow spaces, or multi-point measurement. It is rated IP67.
