September 21 Implementation Chronicles Update

09/21/2005

The much-delayed HMI hardware finally arrived for the biopharmaceutical filtration automation project, but development of HMI applications still await the arrival of the project’s main server. In the meantime, blogger John Sever and his system integrator associates forged ahead on the project by spending time correcting inconsistencies between the I/O list from the skid vendor and the P&IDs. Meanwhile, down in Louisiana, blogger Stan Prutz reports that things are starting to get back to normal following Hurricane Katrina and that their focus is again shifting back to the project at hand in Baton Rouge.

Wastewater SCADA project:
While awaiting maintenance personnel to return to their jobs from scheduled vacations, Prutz and the other integrators at QDS are looking at retaining 13 of the facility’s existing RTUs, requiring firmware upgrades to support the Modbus protocol. Updated EEPROMS are also now being ordered along with the server computers, software, and cell modems, allowing the integrators to move forward with a full SCADA implementation at 13 of the most critical stations.

Biopharmaceutical filtration automation project:
Maintaining consistency between drawings and I/O lists is frequently a difficult task when managed as separate data sources, blogger John Sever reports as Cascade integrators work to correct the inconsistencies between the I/O list from the skid vendor and the P&IDs. Another issue for the integrators to deal with this week came as a result of the initial customer review of the microfiltration design specification. Based on the feedback, the CIP drain sequence operation must now manipulate more discrete valves. The customer has also requested a pre-CIP Pressure Hold Test sequence that will be used before cleaning operations. This will require an additional four equipment modules for the project and modifications to the design documents.
