Shaft grounding bearing isolator

The Garlock SGi seal offers maintenance-free, reliable bearing protection by preventing bearing contamination, lubrication loss and electrical damage.

01/27/2011

Garlock Sealing Technologies, LLC announced the launch of a new bearing isolator that incorporates shaft grounding technology. The Garlock SGi is reportedly the first seal to offer maintenance-free and reliable bearing protection by preventing bearing contamination, lubrication loss and electrical damage.

The Garlock SGi is a marriage of proven technology: the Garlock Guardian non-sparking, non-contact labyrinth seal and the AEGISTM shaft grounding ring. “No other seal provides the level of protection or freedom from costly maintenance like the SGi does,” says Earl Rogalski, senior product manager for Garlock Sealing Technologies.

Rogalski adds: “Nearly every manufacturer is facing challenges to reduce operating costs. A popular method to reduce costly energy consumption it to use variable frequency drives. On the surface, VFD’s provide operational cost savings; however, hidden beneath the savings are increased maintenance costs caused by premature bearing failures. The Garlock SGi solves this failure mode by protecting the bearings from electrical discharge damage, while at the same time preventing contamination ingress and lubrication egress.”

Garlock SGi bearing isolators are designed to easily replace both contact lip seals and traditional bearing isolators used in nearly every industrial application. The Garlock SGi is available for shaft sizes ranging from 0.875” to over 6”, in flanged, flangeless and custom configurations.
