A fundamental move toward software-based design will occur in the digital signal processing field, according to Soenke Mehrgardt, president of the Signal Processing Division of Siemens AG.

In a scheduled keynote address at DSP World featuring ICSPAT conference, Sept. 13-16, in Toronto, Canada, Dr. Mehrgardt was expected to report that, "The demands of system-on-a-chip design are driving the industry to new approaches in hardware/software co-design and reprogrammability for DSP cores."

Dr. Mehrgardt will review the demand for general-purpose architectures and dedicated DSP solutions for particular applications, and discuss current approaches to increasing efficiency for future DSP applications, including parallel execution and superscaler structures. He explains the predicted shift to software-oriented design will provide more flexible configurations and integration of cores, memories, and peripherals, and will also result in a common strategy for customer intellectual property and application-specific designs.
