Siemens announces motors, drives, and motion control advances

The Sinamics S110 drive, C240 PN Simotion motion controller, and the 1PH8 series of motors were debuted by Siemens at the SPS/IPC/Drives show.

Nuremberg, Germany – A new drive, motion controller, and series of motors were debuted by Siemens at the SPS/IPC/Drives show November 25-27, 2008.
The Siemens Drive Technologies Division presented the 1PH8 motor series, which is designed for use in various motion control applications. Based on a flexible modular system, the motors are available both in an asynchronous and a compact synchronous version, either with forced ventilation or water cooling. The motors are designed for use as main drives with outputs of 2.8 kW to 1,340 kW.

Also introduced was the C240 PN Simotion controller—an S7-300 format member of the Simotion motion control system. The controller has a Profinet interface and can control up to 32 motion control axes. Featuring 35 MB memory, combined with the ET 200S high speed Profinet I/O, make the controller suitable for tasks in hydraulic applications. The C240 PN can be used for simple speed-controlled machines as well as for complex multi-axis machines, and features three hardware platforms and numerous software-based functionalities.
Siemens Drive Technologies announced an expansion of its drive line with the Sinamics S110, a single-axis drive in the 0.12 to 90 kW performance range. This AC servo converter has been designed for simple positioning applications with synchronous or asynchronous motors. The drive features a wide array of positioning functions as well as the most common integrated safety functions. It is currently available with either a Profibus or CANopen interface and can be used with the Simatic automation system and a number of controllers.

The Sinamics S110 can be used for simple pick-and-place and feeding tasks, as well as with rotary indexing tables. This converter is also suitable for robotic and handling applications, feeders in printing and paper machines, and for ejectors in injection molding machines. Further possible uses include tool positioning in machining stations, and positioning tasks in wind and solar applications.
One of the key functions of the Sinamics S110 is the integrated basic positioner (EPos). Positioning functions range from relative and absolute traversing with specified velocity and acceleration to more complex functions, such as on-the-fly positioning and referencing. The user can save up to 16 target positions or traverse paths in the drive, including the relevant motion parameters. The individual traversing blocks can be brought together in traversing programs. The single servo meets the safety requirements of category 3 as defined in EN 954-1 and Safety Integrated Level 2 as defined in EN 61508. The safety functions are controlled via three safe inputs and one safe output (terminals) on-board the S110. When integrated into a total automation system, it can also be controlled via the Profisafe profile.
