Norcross, Ga. - Siemens Dematic Electronics Assembly Systems Inc. opened its new Advanced Assembly Technology (AAT) Center at its U.S. headquarters near Atlanta.

As part of the continued commitment of Siemens AG to spend seven percent of revenues on research and development, the AAT Center represents a $10 million investment by Siemens Dematic EAS. The 11,000 square-foot facility is said to be one of the most comprehensive electronics manufacturing R&D centers in the world. Separate technology areas are dedicated to assembly and test, reliability testing and qualification, materials characterization and analysis, as well as failure analysis and surface preparation. The center will further enhance the company's SIPLACE Global Solutions business group in providing electronics manufacturers throughout the world with complete, turnkey assembly lines and process expertise.

Dr. Daniel F. Baldwin has been selected to head the AAT Center's efforts. A professor of mechanical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology since 1995, Dr. Baldwin brings to the center depth of experience in electronics packaging, materials processing and manufacturing systems design. At Georgia Tech, he led the successful Low-Cost Assembly Processing Program for the Center for Board Assembly Research (CBAR), along with other industry-leading research programs. Dr. Baldwin earned his M.S. and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

According to Patrick J. Trippel, president of Siemens Dematic EAS, 'The AAT Center, and the investment we have made in it, reflects Siemens Dematic's continued commitment to providing our customers with the highest levels of leading-edge technology and manufacturing expertise in the industry. With our strength of resources and the guidance of Dr. Baldwin, we expect to realize the sort of technological advancements that will move the industry forward.'

Siemens Dematic Electronics Assembly Systems Inc. is a global player in the electronics manufacturing market. In addition to its SIPLACE component placement systems, SIPLACE Global Solutions offers its customers complete turnkey assembly lines.
