Valencia, CA Specialty Motors (SMI) and FO Engineering have agreed to jointly pursue of new business and development of a new proprietary line of power and motion control products.

SMI has been in the business of manufacturing electric motors for over 35 years. The company makes brush, universal and brushless dc (BLDC) motors for a broad range of customers in a number of diverse industries including:

  • Medical

  • Sporting goods and exercise equipment

  • Aerospace

  • High performance automotive

  • Power tools

  • Dental equipment

  • Construction equipment

  • Industrial process equipment

The company is a niche competitor that specializes in working with small and medium sized customers to develop tailored solutions to system level power and motion control requirements. Full service capabilities from engineering, prototyping and machining to assembly and test assure the best quality and value and allow rapid product development and prototyping, often in days or weeks.

FO Engineering says it is a sophisticated controls technology engineering firm that offers complete engineering and manufacturing service from initial design conceptualization through detail design and production. The major advantage of the teaming agreement is to allow both companies to offer complete motion control solutions to a customer rather than just part of the necessary system. The companies are located within blocks of each other which facilitates the process of product development and prototyping. On some recent projects, tests have been run and design changes incorporated in the same day. SMI is also incorporating FO Engineering’s capabilities in its advertising, sales and marketing to rapidly grow the company’s exposure. This has the added benefit of further differentiating SMI in the market as a full solution provider rather than just a supplier of high quality motors. This is truly a synergistic teaming that allows both companies to do more together than either can do alone, the companies say.

The companies are currently developing integrated motion and power control solutions for three customers and have begun the design and production of a line of proprietary standard products for industrial and commercial use. These will be announced shortly as soon as patent applications have been completed.
