Knoxville, Tenn. – Computational Systems (CSI) , a unit of Emerson Process Management (Austin, Tex.), recently introduced its SpeedVue Model 430 laser speed sensor. Combining a Class III laser with advanced signal processing, SpeedVue measures the RPMs of rotating equipment from as far as 100 ft. without using reflective tape or paint marks.

SpeedVue uses a signal-processing algorithm already integrated in CSI’s portable data collector/analyzer, RBMconsultant Model 2120A. When users connect SpeedVue to an auxiliary input on the analyzer, and shine the laser beam on an exposed rotor area of the rotating equipment, its RPM is automatically displayed on the data analyzer.

SpeedVue’s laser technology offers a promising new means of measuring turning speeds on pulleys, as well as linear speeds of paper machine felts. In the nuclear industry, where reflective tape or paint marks required by other RPM measurement technologies are forbidden, SpeedVue is able to provides accurate turning speeds.
