Billed as the first North American trade event to focus on electric automation technologies for industrial applications, the first SPS Electric Automation America trade show was held May 23-26 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center near Chicago. Several hundred attendees visited more than 70 exhibitors, and attended three seminars and 16 technical conference sessions during the event.

The event’s Technology Theater included presentations by 3S-Smart Software Solutions, Agile Systems Inc., AS-Interface USA, B&R Industrial Automation, CAN in Automation, Contemporary Controls, EPSG-Ethernet Powerlink Standardization Group, EtherCAT Technology Group, Grid Connect Inc., Gross Automation, Harting Inc., Horner APG, Lumberg, Inc., Siemens Energy & Automation, TenAsys Corp., Tol-O-Matic Inc., TR Electronic, and Woodhead.

Organized by Messe Frankfurt Inc., SPS Electric Automation America is the North American counterpart to the annual, Germany-based SPS/IPC/ Drives tradeshow, which is scheduled for Nov. 22-24 in Nuremberg.

Exhibits at SPS Electric Automation America included:

  • DSL 56 motors from the Baumüller Group that reportedly are preferred to conventional pneumatic drives because of their compact size, dynamic response, and peak powers for linear motion. The company adds that its servomotors and integrated (roller/ball) screws produce the highest dynamic response in a compact frame size.

  • A complete line of connectivity products from Lumberg Inc. that meet the harsh environmental demands of the food and beverage processing and packaging industries. Lumberg’s connectivity products use stainless steel hardware, PVC inserts, and cable jackets with over-molding. Rated at IP 69K, each product is produced with smooth surfaces to avoid build-up of residue and bacteria.

  • MechaWare from Motion Engineering Inc. (MEI) is a software tool for creating custom control algorithms for use with all SynqNet motion controllers. MechaWare is a plug-in library for the Matlab/ 0Simulink environment that enables complex motion control development by machine builders. As a result, OEMs can integrate custom control models into their machine design with a high degree of simulation capability and fast experimentation without factory limitations.
