SPS/IPC/Drives 2007 highlights automation systems, components

Nuremburg, Germany — The SPS/IPC/Drives conference and exposition (Nov. 27–29, 2007) was among highlights for the European automation industry, with 1,321 exhibitors from 31 countries presenting systems and components in an exhibition space of 87,900 m2 in 10 exhibition halls. Some1,053 of the exhibiting companies came from inside Germany and 268 from abroad.

Nuremburg, Germany — The SPS/IPC/Drives conference and exposition (Nov. 27–29, 2007) was among highlights for the European automation industry, with 1,321 exhibitors from 31 countries presenting systems and components in an exhibition space of 87,900 m2in 10 exhibition halls. Some1,053 of the exhibiting companies came from inside Germany and 268 from abroad.

Last year, 43,891 visitors attended the event, with 85.5% from inside Germany, and 14.5 % from abroad. The number of German visitors increased by 20% compared to 2005, while the number of international attendees almost doubled from the previous year. This year’s exhibition included offerings covering a wide range of product categories, including:








Event sponsors identified “Ethernet in Automation,” “Safety and Security in Automation,” and “Motion Control” as key topics. They also identified “RFID in Automation” and “Wireless in Automation” as special topics that have a high potential for the future of electric automation.

The biggest joint stand, “Wireless in Automation,” displayed the whole range of for wireless communication solutions. The usage of radio technology in automation has finally grown up, with an endless number of applications realized with different radio solutions, including fast real-time communication, wide distances, and rugged redundant systems for communication. A Speakers’ Corner program under the direction of professor Jörg F. Wollert included presentations on selected joint-stand topics, and a daily panel discussion with manufacturers and users from the automation industry.

The joint stand gave a comprehensive view at the technical possibilities for different applications of wireless communication; 29 exhibitors showed the whole range of solution system: machine-to-machine communication, exchange of data over long distances with GPRS or UMTS, proprietary systems allowing the efficient transmission of energy on long distances, and industrial wireless local area network (WLAN) and Bluetooth interfaces allow interoperability with office and consumer electronic networks. Other exhibitors presented solution systems for secure transmission of data and new concepts for embedding radio technology into established automation networks.

A second joint stand featured “Linux in Automation.” In its seventh edition, this joint stand includes 20 companies displayed Open Source technology. Visitors learned about the increasing acceptance of Linux in automation applications as well as the all-round character of Linux, and virtualization in the Linux kernel.

In addition, the AMA Association for Sensor Technology (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Messwertaufnehmer e.V.) presented the AMA Centre for Sensor Technology, Measuring and Testing Technology, a forum for up-to-date sensor technologies for automation.
