Maynard, MA— Stratus Technologies Inc. announced May 6 that OSIsoft (San Leandro, CA) is offering Stratus’ continuously available ftServer with OSIsoft’s PI System, a real-time information infrastructure. This collaboration is part of an independent application software provider (IASP) agreement that OSIsoft recently signed with Stratus.

ftServer will support Universal Data Server (UDS) and various application servers in PI System. UDS is the system engine that acquires and routes data throughout PI System’s information infrastructure, making data instantly available for operations monitoring, analysis and business reporting.

‘PI System is all about converting real-time data into real-time business intelligence for manufacturing and utilities enterprises,’ says John Rosala, Stratus’ manager of business development for manufacturing systems. ‘Complementing this comprehensive software suite with the industry’s most reliable server technology helps ensure that real-time access is an all-the-time feature.’

ftServer includes a full line of Intel processor-based servers designed for critical processes and operations, in which business continuity, continuous information access and application availability are essential. Reportedly offering better than 99.999% uptime performance, ftServer addresses the primary causes of system downtime and data loss, such as single points of failure; hardware failover and recovery time; faulty device drivers; human error; and component and software revision incompatibilities. Stratus reports that the reliability of the hardware’s fault-tolerant design, coupled with its software-availability features and integrated ActiveService technology, allows it to compete to serve in applications where reliability and operational simplicity are especially important.

‘OSIsoft has built the flexibility into the PI System to keep it aligned with emerging technologies,’ says Alton Loe, OSIsoft’s professional services director. ‘Global manufacturers and utilities invest in the PI System real-time infrastructure for long term value, and fault-tolerant server technology from Stratus overlays that value proposition exceptionally well. There is no hardware platform more reliable. And, like the PI System, ftServer systems integrate quickly and simply into a customer’s IT infrastructure, enabling a rapid return on investment.’

Stratus adds that it is the only server manufacturer to disclose actual recorded ‘availability’ levels for its products based on reported service incidents from the installed base. ftServer’s Uptime Meter is updated daily and can be viewed on Stratus’ website at www.stratus.com/uptime/ftserver.htm. The data is based on operating experience of both hardware and the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system over the most recent six months.
