Training simulators: BP chooses platform for Zhuhai PTA plant project


One of the challenges BP is facing as it expands its No. 2 PTA (purified terephthalic acid) plant in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, China, is ensuring an adequate supply of trained plant operators for the 900,000 tpy unit. To remove this hurdle, BP is using a fully-engineered DYNSIM-based operator training simulator (OTS) from Invensys Process Systems , with advanced dynamic simulation technology from SimSci-Esscor.

"The Invensys OTS project, the first cooperative effort of its kind between BP Zhuhai and Invensys, was completed on schedule in a high-quality manner and fully meets our demanding operator training requirements. We look forward to future cooperative projects with Invensys,” says Mr. Guo Zengshan, OTS project manager for the BPZ No. 2 Project.

The training system for BP applies fundamental chemical engineering modeling techniques and thermodynamic data to provide detailed unit operation process modeling coupled with an exact control replication. The company says this delivers state-of-the-art OTS functionality and accuracy. The flexibility of the DYNSIM solution is made possible by SimSci-Esscor's SIM4ME architecture, which integrates process, controls, and equipment simulation within an open and scalable architecture. The training system includes interfaces to the distributed control system (DCS) and safety integrated system (SIS) simulations to provide a safe, effective, and comprehensive training environment for plant operators.

"We've worked with other OTS vendors in the past," says Patrick McLoughlin, BP project director.
