During this presentation, John Suzukida will help attendees discover the options available to them in their careers-some of which may come to them, others which they may need to pursue. The objective is to help participants make conscious decisions on how to spend their careers in a way that's most valuable to them-and not to passively allow their career to happen. An engineering degree can be an extremely valuable point upon which to build a life of doing what is most fulfilling-awareness of your options is key.

John Suzukida was previously Trane's Senior VP of Global Marketing & Strategy prior to founding Shoreview, Minn.-based Lanex Consulting, LLC in 2002, which focuses on energy efficiency, product-to-solutions transitions and organizational strategy. Clients include Daikin Industries, Portland Energy Conservation, Inc., McQuay, American Air Filter, The West Coast Zero Net Energy Coordinating Council, California Commissioning Collaborative Advisory Council, Danfoss, the National Conference on Building Commissioning, the Ramsey County Attorney's Office, and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Energy Engineering. He has authored numerous articles for industry publications. He has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Illinois and served as president of its Mechanical Engineering Alumni Board. John Suzukida is a licensed PE in the State of Wisconsin and is on the Board of Directors for Steffes, Corp. and the Board of Advisors for EnergyPrint, Inc. John Suzukida is a member of the Career Smart team of columnists for Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine.

Outline:

  • Start with overview of options to introduce some positions of which the audience may not be aware, with ideas for questions to consider asking yourself.
  • Include audience participation time to bring up additional titles/positions for engineers with time for discussion and sharing perspectives, which may resonate with others to help them figure out the right path for them.

Learning objectives:
1. Participants will learn to make conscious decisions on how to spend their careers in a way that's most valuable to them-and not to passively allow their career to happen.
2. The audience will explore and understand the three options available to those with an engineering degree: technical, business, and management.
3. Attendees will review options to introduce some positions of which the audience may not be aware, with ideas for questions to consider asking yourself as you consider various career path alternatives.
4. In a group setting, participants will create a list of possible engineering positions and their descriptions. This is an open discussion and exercise.
