Vicor: Miniature 100-Amp sine-amplitude converter

Vicor Corp. has introduced its V048K015T100 V*I Chip Voltage Transformation Module (VTM), reportedly the first product of its type with 100-Amp maximum continuous capacity.


Vicor’s Voltage Transformation Module can be paralleled for higher current output at voltages settable from 0.8 to 1.6 V dc.

Vicor Corp . has introduced its V048K015T100 V*I Chip Voltage Transformation Module (VTM), reportedly the first product of its type with 100-Amp maximum continuous capacity. VTM is intended for demanding DSP, FPGA, ASIC, processor cores, and microprocessor applications at the point-of-load (POL). It pushes the envelope for speed, density, and efficiency—while providing input-to-output isolation, says Vicor.

VTM chip package has a volume of less than 0.25 cubic in.—a record current density of 400 A/in.s output rating of 100 A up to 1.5 Vout and 150 W, up to 1.6 V over a Vf input range of 26-55 V dc. VTM V048K015T100 operates in open or closed loop, depending on the output regulation needs of the application.

"As a point-of-load current multiplier (32x) with megahertz bandwidth, VTM can eliminate bulk capacitors and high power distribution losses caused by busing high currents to the POL. VTMs maximize POL density and efficiency while minimizing total system cost," according to Vicor.

V*I Chip in a BGA (ball-grid array) package supports in-board mounting with a low profile of 0.16 in. (4 mm). J-lead package options support on-board surface mounting (profile as low as 0.25 in. over the board. Pricing for VTM V048K015T100 in BGA package is under $0.20/A in OEM quantities. (That’s $20 for a 100-A device.) It comes in JEDEC trays or taped and reeled for automated pick-and-place and SMD assembly. Prototype quantities are available now.
