Weekly merger, acquisition, deal update: August 31

This week Morrissey Goodale tracked two domestic deals and two international transactions. This brings the total year-to-date deal count in the United States to 123, up 14% over the 108 domestic deals tracked through the same period in 2011. Domestic M&A has really picked up over the summer and if this pace keeps up, 2012 could be a record year for deal activity. Including the U.S., the total global deal count is now 221, on pace with the 220 global deals tracked through the same period last year.

Late last week, global architecture and engineering design firmAECOM Technology Corporation (Los Angeles, CA) announced it will acquire BKS (Pretoria, South Africa), a 900-person multidisciplinary consulting engineering and management firm, providing engineering and consulting services for public and private sector clients in the areas of buildings, stadia, transportation, water and sanitation, mining and energy throughout Africa.  As a result of the transaction that is expected to close in the fourth quarter, AECOM will own 80% of BKS. Link to details

Earlier this week, global architecture and engineering design firm AECOM Technology Corporation (Los Angeles, CA) also announced it will acquire KPK (Semenanjung, Malaysia), a 600-person construction cost, contract and project management consultancy firm with operations in China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. KPK provides consultancy services for a wide range of facilities, including commercial, residential, industrial and health care.  KPK will join AECOM's 3,000-person Davis Langdon cost and project consultancy business.  Upon completion of the transaction that is expected to close in the fourth quarter, KPK will go to market in most areas as Davis Langdon KPK, an AECOM companyLink to details

Hydraulic engineering and environmental services firm Alden Research Laboratory (Holden, MA) acquired AECOM's hydraulic engineering and modeling laboratory (Redmond, WA), formerly known as the "ENSR hydraulics lab" (becoming part of AECOM in 2005 through AECOM's acquisition of ENSR). Through the transaction, Alden creates the largest commercial hydraulic engineering laboratory system in North America by combining the modeling talents and fisheries knowledge of Alden's staff with the 34 years of hydraulic modeling and fisheries engineering experience of the AECOM hydraulic engineering and modeling operation. The hydraulics lab specializes in the optimization of hydraulic structures and fish passage systems associated with hydroelectric power generation, working especially closely with federal agencies and hydroelectric power utilities in the Pacific Northwest.  Additionally, the lab has helped municipal utilities to ensure proper performance of pump stations and water conveyance systems. Link to details

Architecture and design firm Centric Architecture (Nashville, TN) merged with fellow architecture and design firm Plummer Lowe Architecture & Design (PLAD) Studio (Nashville, TN). Founded in 1955, Centric is a longtime leader in design and restoration projects in Middle Tennessee and throughout the Southeast.  PLAD Studio formed in 2010 and quickly made a significant mark on Nashville with a mix of residential and commercial projects, including the renovation of the Grand Ole Opry House after that year's flood. Through the merger, the firm has deepened its roster of talented architects with expertise in key sectors such as education, religious, entertainment, justice design, banking and finance, historic preservation, and residential.
