Wireless Ethernet expected to surge in industrial applications

Natick, MA— Worldwide shipments of wireless Ethernet infrastructure components and network software for industrial applications is projected to grow at a 34.7% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from $75.1 million in 2003 to $183.4 million in 2006, according to a recent report, ‘Worldwide Industrial Markets for Wireless Ethernet Infrastructure Components and Network Software,’ by Venture Development Corp.

Evolving standards, security enhancements, and increasing bandwidth have combined to propel wireless Ethernet into harsher environments. Meanwhile, wireless Ethernet’s success in warehouse/distribution applications has carried over into shop-floor control environments. VDC adds that the benefits of using wireless Ethernet in industrial applications include:

• Mobility. Portable operator interfaces with wireless monitoring and control capabilities allow users to interface with equipment remotely, enhancing operator safety and providing the flexible network architectures desired in plant installations.

• Flexibility. Wireless solutions allow easier add-ons, removals, and changes to the network. This is especially valuable in applications where change-outs or expansions are frequent and expensive.

• Cost. Wireless networks negate the cost of the cable previously needed to connect devices and controllers. Eliminating the need for wires inherently decreases installation time, providing a significant savings on materials and labor costs.
