Wireless LAN technologies announced as IEEE confirms Wi-Fi draft specification


Santa Clara, CAIEEE Task Group “N” has voted to confirm the proposal for the 802.11n Wi-Fi standard, according to a Business Wire report. The specification developed by the Enhanced Wireless Consortium (EWC) and submitted by the Joint Proposal team, which also contributed to it, becomes the first official draft of the 802.11n standard.

The proposed Wi-Fi standard is intended to enable high-performance, next-generation wireless local area networking (WLAN) products. The draft supports speeds of up to 600 Mbps, a significant increase over today’s Wi-Fi networks. The change is expected to allow wireless products across multiple market segments to support multimedia applications. The draft must still go through the IEEE ratification process, which typically takes about a year.

Wireless solutions developer and EWC member Atheros Communications Inc . followed the action with an announcement that it is launching its Xspan family of WLAN technologies and making available the AR5008 series of chipsets, the first to deliver Xspan benefits. The products are said to be the first based on the draft 802.11n specification. The AR5008 series reportedly delivers six times the throughput of 802.11g and 802.11a/g products at extended range and with greater reliability.
